What should families know before relocating to Scottsdale, Arizona with children? Scottsdale offers families access to established public and private school options, year-round outdoor recreation, and neighborhood communities designed with kids in mind, particularly in North Scottsdale.
Relocating is a logistical puzzle. Relocating with kids is an emotional one. Not only are you a home, you're choosing the school your child walks into on the first day, the park where they'll make their first neighborhood friend, and the community that shapes their daily routine.
Scottsdale consistently attracts families from across the country, particularly from California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest. The draw isn't hard to understand: 300+ days of sunshine, low property taxes, a strong economy, and a family infrastructure that goes well beyond good weather.
Here's what matters most if you're moving here with children.
Two public school districts serve the majority of Scottsdale: Paradise Valley Unified School District (PVUSD) and Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD).
PVUSD covers northeast Phoenix and a significant portion of North Scottsdale. The district operates 28 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and five high schools. It offers International Baccalaureate programming (K–12), STEM-focused tracks through the CREST program at Paradise Valley High School, and the North Valley Arts Academy for students drawn to performing and visual arts. Grayhawk Elementary School, located inside the Grayhawk community, is part of PVUSD and serves pre-K through 6th grade with STEAM programming and gifted services. Students from Grayhawk typically feed into Mountain Trail Middle School and Pinnacle High School, which offers AP coursework, CTE programs in culinary arts, marketing, and graphic design, and a 96.2% graduation rate.
SUSD spans 29 campuses across Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and parts of Phoenix and Fountain Hills, serving roughly 21,000 students. Multiple SUSD elementary schools including Anasazi, Kiva, and Redfield were named 2026 A+ Schools of Excellence by the Arizona Educational Foundation.
On the private side, Alpha School Scottsdale is a newer K–8 option located on North 76th Street, adjacent to Grayhawk Park. Alpha uses an AI-driven, mastery-based academic model where students complete core subjects in two hours per day, with the remaining time dedicated to life-skills workshops, leadership development, and project-based learning. Tuition is $40,000 per year with a 6:1 student-to-guide ratio. Phoenix Country Day School in Paradise Valley and El Dorado School within the Grayhawk community are additional private options families regularly consider.
Grayhawk in North Scottsdale is one of the most common landing spots for relocating families. The community includes roughly 3,800 homes across two distinct neighborhoods, The Park and The Retreat. Combined they have seven community pools, six tennis courts, pocket parks, tot lots, and a 13-acre city park with baseball fields, soccer fields, volleyball courts, a playground, and a dog park. Grayhawk also has its own community events director who runs a year-round calendar of family activities.
Beyond Grayhawk, families often explore DC Ranch, Desert Ridge, McDowell Mountain Ranch, and Pinnacle Peak. All are located in the North Scottsdale corridor with access to PVUSD or SUSD schools, trail systems, and community amenities.
Scottsdale runs a robust Parks and Recreation program with youth sports leagues, summer camps (starting at $160/week for 2026), adaptive recreation programs, and teen camps at community centers like Horizon and Chaparral. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is a family staple — free admission with miniature train rides, model train exhibits, shaded playgrounds, and a vintage carousel.
The city maintains 46 parks. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve offers 225+ miles of trails, many of which are stroller- and family-friendly (Gateway and Lost Dog Wash trailheads are local favorites). OdySea Aquarium, Butterfly Wonderland, and iFLY Indoor Skydiving round out the indoor options for when summer heat peaks.
Is Scottsdale a good place to raise a family? Scottsdale offers families access to two established public school districts, a deep roster of private school options, year-round youth programs, and outdoor recreation. The North Scottsdale corridor in particular is designed around family living, with master-planned communities, parks, and trail systems.
